What is cohousing

Imagine...

A neighborhood that integrates green design with a social, supportive community life. Neighbors know one another. They have worked with an architect to design their dream environment and to tread lightly on the earth.

Cohousing communities consist of private, fully-equipped dwellings and extensive common amenities including a common house and recreation areas. The common house is the very heart of a cohousing community. It provides a place for community activities such as common dinners, and numerous other organized formal and informal activities.

Residents are involved early in the design and development phases so that the community reflects their priorities. Residents live in a close-knit neighborhood that seeks a healthy blend of privacy and community.

OUR COMMON HOUSE

We have built our community around a 4,000+ sq foot building called the Common House. It is the heart of our activities with a spacious kitchen and dining area for us to enjoy community meals during the week.

The Common House is an extension of your personal home - it's where you'll find your mail, a spare room for your overnight guests, and plenty of space for hobbies and get-togethers.

We have a third-floor deck with fabulous views of downtown and the common green. It's the perfect place to spend time with friends and neighbors.

OUR OUTDOOR SPACES

Cohousing encourages an outdoors lifestyle by leaving space for us to enjoy our shared space. We have both a common green area and a community garden on our property. The landscape was planned based on the community's desire to have a beautiful and enriching outdoor space which the community will support through our shared efforts.

OUR intentional

community

We have chosen to live in cohousing because we would like to make decisions with our neighbors. Our community uses consensus decision making in our deliberations and we have formed a series of community agreements to guide us.

That doesn't mean we always agree! But it does mean we'll work together to find the best answer for the community and regularly contribute our time and energy for the good of the community.

This also makes it possible for us to create community initiatives for the good of the whole community such as composting for our gardens, a car-share among neighbors, or bulk purchasing.

Cohousing communities first came to the United States about thirty years ago and have been developed across the country. Communities affiliate with the national Cohousing Association, whose website is a deep resource of information.
